John's wine culture experience began with Brand's "Laira" Coonawarra reds at the age of 20 years in 1973.

Thereafter, the 'wine bug' had struck, and the symptoms manifested as a collection of Australian and European wines.

In 1993 we planted three acres each of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier in our desertscape backyard at Greenhills, Victor Harbor, Southern Fleurieu Peninsula. Our first sparkling wine was released late December 2002.

1998 saw John and a good mate 'pick over' a machine harvested vineyard at Lyndoch. Just under a tonne of mixed red grapes produced a 'mates quaffer'.

In 1999 John accepted an offer of a tonne each of 80 year old dry grown Grenache and 5 year old Shiraz from the same vigneron and David Powell of Torbreck offered to vinify the small parcel of fruit.

Mt Billy was born.
